West Coast Cruise 2018

Gayle Boles

This was a blessed adventure with my friend Melita McAtee, whose had a stressful couple of years with the death of her husband and having hip surgery. I met Melita at the airport in Austin Texas at 6:30 AM on April 3rd. had to be there at that disgusting hour because our flight to LA was at 8:35.

We were picked up at the LA airport by Princess Cruises and was checked into our stateroom on the Star Princess by 1:00 PM. We had a big beautiful handicap room, which impressed Melita because she was expecting a small cramped room.

On the 4th we docked in Santa Barbara CA. Melita and I toured Montecito where they had the massive mudslide on January 9th, 2018. The tour was called a History Tour and we thought we were going to see a lot of homes of various celebrities. It was an incredibly bad tour; we just rode around in a bus and saw 20 foot high foliage. The guide would say “behind these bushes is the estate of Oprah Winfrey” or some celebrity. The only thing we actually got to see was some damage created by the mudslide. Everyone on the tour was very angry and I filed a complaint when I got back on the ship.

The 5th was a Sea Day, which meant we didn’t dock anywhere. Melita and I had coffee and breakfast delivered to the room. Later we played bingo and lost a little money then ate lunch in the dining room. After eating Melita went to the computer room to get some real estate work done for her son James. I went to an art auction then went to some sales they were having in the shops. I bought a cute watch and a rose gold necklace.

We docked in San Francisco on April 6th for a very cold and rainy day. I got off the ship anyway, even though I didn’t have a coat, for a tour of the city on a hop-on-hop-off bus. Melita stayed on the ship. The tour drove around the city so we saw and heard about a lot of interesting places like Fisherman’s Wharf, Haight Ashbury, Golden Gate Park, Lombard Street and Chinatown Gate. I enjoyed the experience but I didn’t get off the bus because it was too cold. We ended up picking up a number of people that just wanted to get back to the ship due to the weather. I’d like to go back and spend a couple of days in San Francisco.

We had a Sea Day on the the 7th and boy was it a very ruff sea! It was hard to keep my balance if I wasn’t in a hallway. After breakfast in our room Melita and I went to the spa far a massage at 8:00. It cost $148 for 75 minutes (they automatically added a $20 tip). After lunch, everyone ate in their rooms, I played bridge with 3 nice ladies till 3:00. Melita worked on her computer some more, trying to make the final arrangements for her son’s house. We had a good dinner that evening with our tablemates.

The 8th was another ruff sea day; so bad that our stop in Astoria was canceled. It was a laid back, lazy day. I played bridge with the same ladies again.

We docked in Nanaimo, British Columbia on the 9th and I took a tour of that fascinating city. It’s a small harbor city and I loved walking through downtown Nanaimo and the Old City Quarter. I really enjoyed walking down Commercial Street, visiting the Nanaimo Art Gallery and having lunch at one of the cute cafes. I also ate a Nanaimo bar, it’s ice cream in two chocolate caramel cookies, delicious!

A colorful area in Nanaimo

We disembarked in Vancouver, BC at 9:00 AM on the 10th for a tour of the city, our bags were delivered to our hotel. It was a lovely city, much larger than Nanaimo. We got to see the huge clock run by steam, a big statue of a guy named Gassy Jack (and heard his weird story), we saw Yaletown, Liberty Square, Davie Village and Maple Tree Square. I’d like to spend four days there so I could soak up the culture. Melita and I walked around some and got and got dropped off at the Hampton Inn at 3:00, pretty tired.

The next day was calm and lazy. We got up late and had breakfast then walked around the area for a while before we caught the shuttle to the airport at 11:30 for our 2:45 flight home. It was a really enjoyable trip with a good friend.
