Things started getting revved up in August for our class of 1967 reunion to be held September 28th-30th. I posted a question to Jeff on Facebook, asking if he was going to be in Dodge at that time, so we could get together. Well, Becky saw it and thought it would be neat to take Mom up for the reunion, family & school. I told her I thought it would be fun.

I then let Penny, Sydney, Glenda & Ginger know that Mom was thinking about joining us at the class reunion and everyone got excited about seeing her.

I left Pflugerville on September 27th. That way I only had to drive 360 miles to Altus OK in one day. Then I drove the rest of the way on Friday. My brother Jeff met me at the Dodge House at 2:30 to help me with my luggage; it was great to see him. Mom and Becky got there around 3:30.

Got to see, hug and talk to so many old friends, while we were in the lobby of the Dodge House.  I’ll try and list the names of the ones I can remember; Penny Lopp, Claudia, Sydney, Ginger, George, Ted, Trudy, Greg, Linda, Cathy, Bob Bardhyt, Suzanne, Bonnie, Joe, Carol McConnell, Clifford, Lynn Williamson and Penny Kilgore. It was amazing how many people said “Do you remember me?” and I actually did! I swear we all, or at least most, still look like we’re in our 40’s, at least to us.

Friday evening the class was going to the high school home-coming game but I figured I’d have a hard time getting into the stands with my walker so I stayed with my family. Mom, Becky & I drove around Dodge City and checked out our old house.

Our previous home for many years, I think we moved in there in 1963. 2500 Howell here: the white picket fence is gone and the roof looks bad, we also had the front door a dark blue, but still a nice house.

The city has changed but it hasn’t grown much.

On Saturday, the 29th, I met Wade, Glenda, Sydney, Penny Lopp, Ginger, Ted, Joe and Penny Kilgore for breakfast at the Dodge House. Then Mom, Becky & I went to Boothill and the Front Street Replica. It’s been fixed up pretty good. I ended up spending $119 on gifts and souvenirs. I met my class there, pictures below:

The group of us had a BBQ lunch at the Occidental on Front Street. Then Sydney, Glenda, Wade, Ginger and I drove around the city, Wade driving. It was really fun to relive so many memories in the grand old city. Sydney, Glenda and I went to school together starting in Elementary school and were practically inseparable, with a few normal falling outs over the years, so we had lots of ‘remember whens’. We met Ginger when we went to Junior High. We saw where Cathy, Ginger, Becky Windle and I used to live. We had to call Cathy to check on her old address because it looked so different around there. I thought we were going to die of shock when we saw Becky’s old house; it used to be this neat house made out of logs that was just down the street from my folks house. It now looks like a place where Hillbillies live. The logs look like they’re rotten, with junk all over the yard. And I swear to God there was this guy kicked back in a chair on the porch that looked like he was out of the movie ‘Deliverance’. From Becky’s we headed over to where Ginger used to live. The whole area where they used to keep their horses is now houses. The house itself was pretty run down and there was a Dillon’s grocery store practically next to the house to the west. It was very disheartening. We then took a stopover at Sydney’s parent’s house to use the restroom and say hi to her folks. Her dad, Harrison is 91 and still pretty robust, her mom, Faye is 89 and getting feeble but everyone was glad to see them.

That evening the class and the guests we brought had dinner at the event center. It was fun to meet the families of some of our classmates. Becky and Mom went with me; I think they enjoyed it as much as I did. We left around 10:00; it had been a long tiring day for us.

We got up early Sunday, Mom always does, so I could finish packing and get my car loaded. Mom and Becky were staying in Dodge until Monday but I had to leave. Mom, Becky and I met Sydney, Harrison and Faye at the Country Club for brunch.

Mom almost cried when she saw how frail Faye was as she came in walking with a walker. Thank goodness Becky was there when Sydney had some difficulties getting her mother to the restroom. It reminded me of the problems that come along with us living longer.

I really enjoyed reminiscing about the wonderful times our families used to have in Dodge City. We probably spent more than two hours there, talking, laughing and eating. I know Mom and Harrison got a kick out of it.

After our luncheon I headed out so I could make it to Altus Oklahoma before dark. A bunch of us female classmates decided we’d meet in San Francisco some time in 2014 to celebrate turning 65. I can now look forward to our next adventure.
