Demian and his wife Nok moved to Chicago, Illinois a year ago and it had been longer than that since I had seen them. Due to the excitement about the trip I decided to take Toll Road 130 to the airport so I could get there faster. What I didn’t realize was that there isn’t a labeled airport exit of 130! I kept looking for one and decided exit before I ended up in Houston. Luckily when I got off there were signs directing me to highway 71 and I knew that went by Bergstom Airport, so I took it. I ended up getting to the airport parking lot at 11:00 am, the time I should have been checking in for my flight. I parked and rushed to catch the shuttle to the Spirit terminal. Luckily there was a girl with a wheelchair there that rushed me through security and got me to my gate in time. By the grace of God I was on the plane when it took off at 1:00. We got to Chicago at 3:45 but we had to wait for a place to park and deplane.

We finally got off the plane at 5:00 and Demian was there waiting for me. He’s grown his hair out a little and looked so handsome. After getting my suitcase and his car (actually Nok’s car) he drove me around the part of town where my hotel, The Drake, and his apartment is. The area is right on Lake Michigan and is called the ‘Gold Coast’. It has townhouses worth 1 to 7 million dollars; pictures of some of them below.

Some neat houses we saw, they have no yards.

Demian has really become satisfied with this city; he showed so much pride when he told me about the different sites and homes he was pointing out. I hope that means he feels like he belongs here.

We went to the Drake and checked me in around 8:00. We sat in my room, which had 2 chairs and a couch besides the two beds, and talked for a while. He told about his web site ‘Robert August’ where he sells handmade shoes and his job at ‘Geneva Seal’ where they sell expensive watches. He’s very enthusiastic about both endeavors. We ate dinner at the hotel, which was very loud, and then he went home.

On Monday, September 2nd, I woke up at 7:00 and ate a granola bar with a couple of cups of coffee. I then got dressed and walked around the inside of the hotel, which is huge and beautiful. They have some shops which were way too expensive for me but it was fun looking at their merchandise.

Demian and Nok walked to the Drake at 11:30 and we ate lunch in the coffee shop there. We then took an Uber to the place where we were scheduled to take a river and Lake Michigan cruise. We had to walk what seemed like a mile from where the Uber let us off to where we caught the boat. Demian and Nok walk everywhere in Chicago; to & from work, to the grocery store & places of entertainment, so they are used to it. I’m afraid I don’t walk much so I wasn’t.

We got on the boat a little early because I’m handicapped and found our seats on the upper deck. I heard the tour was 2 hours so I thought I’d better go to the restroom before we took off. Demian helped me down the stairs. While I was in the restroom the boat took off with a jerk that threw me on the floor. I hit really hard and ended up with a big bruise on my right knee and arm and another one on the left side of my chest where I hit the handle of my walker. Thankfully I had already peed or there would have really been a mess. I got myself up and out the door where Demian stood very worried because the jerk of the boat had thrown him too.

The cruise was pretty interesting. The guide pointed out a lot of buildings along the river and gave us the history of the structures along with what had happened in and around them. Pictures below. It was really fascinating to hear about some of the historical people and events connected with Chicago. So often we just hear about the gangsters that set up shop here in the 1920’s.

After the cruise we took an Uber to the Cheesecake Factory for Dinner. I ate too much but it was good. We went back to the hotel at 8:30 and talked for a while and then they walked home. It was a tiring but fun day.

Tuesday the 3rd was a very enjoyable day. Demian and Nok picked me up at 11:00, I had eaten breakfast in my room. We drove out to the Botanical Gardens. It was one of the most beautiful and relaxing places I’ve ever been. Thank God Demian got a wheelchair for me there. He ended up pushing me around for more than 5 miles, which allowed us to see all 5 islands of the garden. Demian didn’t complain but I’m sure his arms and back were killing him after pushing me around so long. Nok and I took some beautiful pictures. We ate lunch there at at the Garden View Cafe.

When we left the garden, Demian drove us around to see some of the big estates in the suburbs. Then we had dinner at the Vava Indian Restaurant. That was the spiciest food I’ve ever eaten, but they seemed to like it.

After dinner we drove to their apartment. It’s really a cute place, on Lake Shore Drive, on the 13th floor where they have a view of Lake Michigan. It was quite a bit larger than I expected. I also got to see my ‘grand-dogs’, Molly and Leo. They are very cute small dogs. They were supper excited to see us; Leo showed it more than Molly because he’s younger. Demian and Nok obviously love them like their children. It was heart warming to see them interacting. We played with the dogs until about 10:00 then they took me back to the hotel.

September 4th started off as such a nice day, Demian and Nok picked me up and we had a nice brunch, then they drove me to the airport. The plane took off on time, the flight was comfortable and I thought all was fine with the world.

Then reality hit; I couldn’t find my parking ticket or the paper that I wrote the lot number and space where I parked. The parking lot shuttle driver was really nice and let me ride along while he dropped other people off so I could look for my car. We drove around for half an hour but couldn’t find my car. The driver finally called security and they sent someone to get me. All he had to do was find out what time I got there and he called that in; they then told him what areas of the lot were open at that time. He drove me to those sections and we found my car. He then led me out to highway 71. I thought I was home safe because I knew to take 71 to 183, then exit on Cameron and drive to my house, so I didn’t turn my GPS on. But wouldn’t you know there was a wreck on Cameron and I got rerouted and lost. I finally turned on my GPS and got home an hour later then planed. Thank God Cristel was there waiting for me to give me my scheduled massage. She is such a blessing to me.
