My mom, Beth Boles, recently moved into an Independent Living two bedroom apartment near my sister Becky. She had been living alone ever since Dad died in 2001. A cousin of ours, Ann, lived real close and they played cards on a daily basis so Becky and I didn’t worry too much about her.
However, in the last year she had begun to trip and fall as she entered her garage when she walked home from Ann’s house. The last two times she fell she injured herself pretty badly when she hit her head on the cement. The last time she gave herself a concussion, split her head open and had to get stitches.
This scared Becky and I to death. We talked to each other about what we should do to keep her safe, and then we spoke with her. I’m afraid Mom had so many preconceived ideas about these Independent/Assisted Living facilities that she wouldn’t even talk to us about it. It was like if she moved out of her house, she would automatically lose all independence.
Well, Becky drove the 300 miles to Mom’s house and talked her into coming to her house for a couple of weeks. While they were in Hereford TX, Becky took her to the Independent/Assisted Living apartments to check it out. Mom was amazed at how nice and roomy they were. She spoke with the manager and found out that she would be as independent as she chose to be. So Mom was put on the waiting list for when an apartment became available.
That was a perfect situation because it gave Mom the time to process everything. It also allowed her to say her good byes to Ann and her sister-in-law Jean. By the time an apartment became available Mom understood that this was the safest place for her.

The first time I called her after she moved into the apartment she was kind of disorientated. Of course she still had boxes sitting around waiting to be unpacked and put away—Thank God Becky was there to help.
The next week when I called she was sick and a little depressed. I think all of the changes and even the way she labeled herself was getting to her. She wasn’t sure she had done the right thing. This worried me a little bit.
By the next week, when I called, she was feeling better and not so stressed out. She had everything put away and she was getting acquainted with her neighbors. She eats lunch with an established group and they invite her to play dominos every afternoon.
Then last week she was actually excited about the friends she was making and all of the activities she was involved in. She said she hasn’t been this busy since she was in school. She is really enjoying this new stage of her life. Below are pictures of the living room and one of the bedrooms.
