I’ve been playing Texas Canasta at the Baca Center ever since I retired in 2015 and have made some good friends there. So, when Linda and Michael planned a Caribbean cruise for us canasta players I signed up even though I’d been on this same cruise twice before, but never on the Carnival Line.
I shared a handicap cabin with Marie Holman and she drove us to Galveston on January 17th. We spent the night at the Moody Gardens Hotel before we boarded the Carnival Vista ship for our cruise which started on the 18th.
The cabin was big and very comfortable, which we liked, but that ship was the biggest one I’d ever been on. I had major problems getting around the ship so I rented a wheelchair. Thank God Marie was kind enough to push me around. However we had a lot of trouble finding a chair that was small enough for me and easy to open and close, but we finally did.
The first two days we were at sea and the 10 of us played cards most of the time. Five of us played in the Red Frog Pub (2 people alternating sitting out). It got pretty loud in there in the afternoons but we made do.
On the 20th we docked in Cozumel Mexico and I had paid for an excursion to see the area. However when I went to the place on the ship to go on the trip, they wouldn’t allow me on the tender that would take us ashore! I was very angry, but Marie and I both got a refund.
Later in the afternoon the ship got close enough for passengers to walk off. Marie and I got off the ship after eating lunch, taking the wheelchair. We had a good time walking around the city and checking out the cute little shops. I got really excited when we went by a tee-shirt shop and saw a Kansas City Chief’s shirt (the Chiefs were going to be in the Superbowl for the 1st time in 50 years), so we turned around and I bought one with hopes high for the game in February.

On the 21st I went on an excursion with Marie to see Belize City. We were on a bus and I was able to get off using my walker to see an old prison there. It was 200 years old and interesting but I couldn’t go up to the second floor. The rest of the tour I had to stay in the bus and see things through the window, but at least Marie got to visit the different sites and she would tell me about them when she got back on the bus, God bless her. I was allowed to get off at a restroom stop at least. After we got back on the ship I canceled the excursion I had scheduled for the next day. I didn’t want to be stuck on a bus again, I got a refund.
Marie and I had a very enjoyable day in Roatan Honduras on the 22nd. We took the wheelchair and strolled around the city, absorbing the peaceful atmosphere. When we got back on the ship we found out Ann Gladhill, one of our group, had been injured. She and Donna had just disembarked when a big group of passengers came rushing down the ramp to get to their excursion and knocked her flat on her face on the cement. No one even stopped to see if she was alright, thankfully Donna was with her and she ran back on the ship to get some help. They took her by wheelchair to the infirmary, where she spent the day. She had a broken thumb, two black eyes and had to get three stitches in her forehead. When she came to dinner that evening she looked like she’d been in a fight. We had arranged to get a group picture taken that night (below) and Ann is the one hiding behind the sign.

Out of 15 cruises that I’ve taken, this was the first one I’ve taken with the Carnival Cruise Line & it will be my last with them. None of the excursions they offer are suitable for older people with physical limitations, the music in the public areas is so loud you can’t carry on a conversation, the foods not that good and the toilet in our handicap cabin was too low.
Thursday and Friday were sea days and the 10 of us from Baca enjoyed ourselves eating too much and playing cards. I did like spending time with our group and playing cards.
We got back to Galveston in the afternoon on Saturday the 25th and Marie and I were in the last group to disembark. We thought that traffic in Houston would be light on a Saturday, but boy were we wrong; it was disastrous. We ended up not getting back to Pflugerville until 8:00 which stressed Marie & I out. But it was fun spending time with friends and playing cards.
