March has been a very exciting month for me; it definitely came in like a lion. It started with my 60th birthday on March 8th. Clair gave me a really cute card, made me some of her wonderful brownies and a $25 gift card from Wal-Mart. Wasn’t that sweet of her? Then, at work Betty made me a chocolate cake and everyone signed a cute card for me. Mom called to wish me a happy birthday & said that she sent a card but I haven’t received it yet. I didn’t get a call from Becky or Demian which hurt my feelings. I really enjoyed the warmth & recognition from the other people though.

In December 2008 I began the process of looking for a new place to live. I started off at Palm Harbor Homes, which is the brand of home I bought in 2002. I found one I liked but when the salesman put through my application for a loan it was turned down because I had defaulted on the loan for the previous Palm Harbor home. I was disappointed but I half way expected it.

Then, a week or so later I was contacted by a real-estate company that asked if I was still looking for a house. I told him yes but then explained what happened with the Palm Harbor home I was looking at. He said that loans for modular (mobile) homes were harder to get now days because they lose so much value the minute they are moved off the lot where they were sold. He went on to say that he thought he could get me a loan and would like to show me some homes. I thought what the heck & agreed to meet him. He showed me some homes & then we went through the process of applying for a loan.  I was leery but I’ll be darned if he didn’t find me a loan for $150,000! That really got me excited and I started the search in earnest.

I looked at some new Centex houses in Hutto, they were nice but the closets in the two smaller bedrooms were tiny like a coat closet. I then started looking at some pre-owned houses in north Austin & Pflugerville, it seemed like I looked at dozens of them but I finally found one I loved. It was a three bedroom, two bathroom brick house that was 1688 square feet. The owners were asking $141,000 for it, but I had already set my limit at $130,000 because the payments were within my budget. I told that to my realtor, Rick Kolton and he said that he’d offer them $120,000 and see where that went.

Well, it worked out great. I got the house for $130,000 and was able to move in on March 14th. Clair and I were really lucky to have a lot of good people that helped us with the move. All together there were 17 people, at different times during the day that gave us assistance.  Some were there more for entertainment, like Russ & Grayson with my hats.

After a week of very hard work, mainly by Clair, the house is starting to look inhabitable.

This is the den, it still needs some work.

Clair’s bedroom, bathroom and sitting room are across the hall from my room. She has them fixed up really cute but I didn’t get any pictures because I didn’t want to intrude.
